Jason’s House is a supportive residential community for people in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. Its purpose is to assist individuals following completion of rehabilitation services to build a life that is fulfilling, stable, rich, and dignified – a life which fully replaces the scars and temptations of substance abuse with the strength, confidence, and spirituality of a fully functional, liberated individual. Jason’s House, Inc. is a nonprofit entity. It supports the residents of Jason’s House by arranging access to community resources necessary for each of them to be a successful, contributing member of society.
These resources include spiritual guidance, housing, food, medical care, job placement services, transportation, schooling, legal and other professional services. Jason’s House is a ministry open to all individuals. A council of the Catholic Church advised in 2001 that “the phenomena of drugs and alcoholism cannot be combatted … nor can effective action be taken for the healing and recovery of their victims unless the human values of love and life are first restored – the only ones capable, especially if illuminated by religious faith, of giving full meaning to our existence.” Thus, Jason’s House is about filling the void created by addiction with the truth of Christ’s Mercy through fulfilling and supportive human relationships.
Jason’s House has arisen out of the heartbreak of parents, family and friends who have repeatedly witnessed loved ones torn by substance abuse. It is borne of the experience of watching as they bounce from one rehab facility or emergency room to the next, often times only enjoying brief stretches of sobriety before returning to drug usage. This cycle of failure, we believe, often results from the fact that, during treatment, many people in recovery never develop the coping, stress management, life skills, and spirituality that are necessary to support a lasting recovery. It is hoped the more comprehensive post-recovery efforts of Jason’s House will prepare individuals for productive and hope-filled participation in society. Thus, Jason’s House will address an apparent gap in services as a complementary program in the New Orleans area to support lasting recovery.
